Myseum of Toronto Changes Its Name to 'Museum of Toronto'

Toronto, ON (April 2, 2024) 

Today, Myseum of Toronto announced it will officially change its name to ‘Museum of Toronto’. The name change comes as part of the institution’s ongoing commitment to accurately reflect the city of Toronto and its growing residents and further represent itself as Toronto’s city museum.

Since its inception in 2015, Myseum of Toronto has been dedicated to preserving and celebrating the cultural significance of Toronto’s rich history. Myseum of Toronto has welcomed over 5 million visitors in-person and online, and was the 2022 esteemed Heritage Toronto Award recipient. Myseum has taken pride in curating immersive and educational experiences for visitors from all different backgrounds. This name change represents an evolution while staying true to the museum’s core mission – inspiring and connecting people through Toronto histories.

“After careful consideration and discussions with Toronto residents, the City of Toronto, and our supporters, we have decided to simplify our name to ‘Museum of Toronto,” says Heidi Reitmaier, Executive Director. “We believe this change will make us more accessible and recognizable to our diverse audience, from dedicated cultural enthusiasts to casual visitors.”

The Museum of Toronto will continue honouring and representing the myriad of voices and stories that have contributed to Toronto’s growth and recognition as a first-class city.

This decision from the Museum Board recognizes the contributions of Diane Blake and Stephen Smith, who have been instrumental in the continued success and growth of Myseum of Toronto into Museum of Toronto.

“Ten years ago, we started a journey to create a museum to tell the many stories of Toronto,” says Diane Blake, co-founder of Museum of Toronto. “Museum of Toronto is a city museum that brings people together to connect, share and learn from each other. This name change represents another step forward in building Toronto’s first city museum, and we invite you to join us.”

As the Museum of Toronto embarks on this new chapter, the institution will continue to expand its exhibits, events, and educational programs, providing an inclusive platform for artists, historians, educators, and enthusiasts to engage with and celebrate Toronto’s evolution. The name change also comes with an updated logo, website, and social channels.

The Museum of Toronto has just come off the most successful year in its history. With in-person attendance of over 85,000 in 2023. Museum of Toronto has also achieved a remarkable 12-fold increase in the number of individual donors, growing to nearly 500. Additionally, they are partnering with two new corporate sponsors, RBC Foundation and Canada Life on their multi-year project, The 52: Stories of Women Who Transformed Toronto.
