Baseball was being played in Toronto more than a century before the Blue Jays were born.

In this online course, we’ll explore the game’s evolution in our city — from the days when it was a working class sport played by “undesirables” to Joe Carter jumping for joy in front of 50,000 screaming fans.

Along the way, we’ll meet everyone from con artists and kidnappers to eccentric millionaires and feminist icons — the people who’ve made Toronto baseball what it is… and helped transform our city in the process.

Join us weekly on Tuesdays for this 4-week masterclass, starting February 20th.

More About Adam

Adam Bunch

Adam Bunch is an award-winning storyteller who brings the history of Toronto and Canada to life. He’s the author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love, the host of the Canadiana documentary series, and the creator of the Toronto Dreams Project. He’s taught history at George Brown College and created writing workshops for the Toronto Public Library. He’s spoken at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum, and his writing has appeared in The Toronto Star, Spacing Magazine and The Huffington Post. His work popularizing Canadian history was recognized with an honourable mention for a Governor General’s Award in 2012.

Morgan Campbell

Morgan Campbell joined CBC Sports in 2021 as the first Senior Contributor after 18 standout years at the Toronto Star. In 2004 he won the National Newspaper Award for “Long Shots,” a serial narrative about a high school basketball team from Scarborough. Later created, hosted and co-produced “Sportonomics,” a weekly video series examining the business of Sport. And he spent his last two years at the Star authoring the Sports Prism initiative, a weekly feature covering the intersection of sports, race, business, politics and culture. Morgan is also a TedX lecturer, and a frequent contributor to several CBC platforms, including the extremely popular and sorely-missed Sports Culture Panel on CBC Radio Q. His work has been featured in the New York Times, the Literary Review of Canada, and the Best Canadian Sports Writing anthology.

Sam Laskaris

Sam Laskaris has been a Toronto-based freelance writer since 1986. His articles have been published in more than 250 newspapers and magazines across Canada and the United States. Sam specializes in sports writing but also writes about numerous topics including news, business, entertainment and economic developments for various publications. His first two sports books, on NFL player Aaron Rodgers and U.S. gymnast Simone Biles, will be published next summer.
