This panel discussion, presented by Museum of Toronto and the Bata Shoe Museum, brings together pros who work at the intersection of these two influential industries with perspectives from OVO, Makeway, the NCAA, and more.
From courtside culture, to streetwear and beyond, let’s explore the interwoven influence of these two worlds.
On March 6th, we’ll explore the history, economies, and evolutions of fashion and sports, offering a unique perspective on empowering women in streetwear and sneaker culture.

Inspired by the Museum’s exhibition Winners & Losers: Sports Histories of Toronto and the Bata Shoe Museum’s exhibition Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s, this lively discussion offers a unique perspective on empowering women in streetwear and sneaker culture.
Meet the Panel
Abby Albino, Makeway Co
Abby is a panelist at this event.
Abby Albino started her career in the fast-paced sports and entertainment industry as a key member of the PR team at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. As a proud child of Filipino immigrants, Abby parlayed her love and passion of Filipino culture and co-founded Rise Tribe, a charity focused on empowering the next generation of Filipino-Canadian youth. Most recently, Abby cemented her place as a “One to Watch” when she took her love for sneakers and streetwear and co-founded Makeway, Canada’s first and only sneaker boutique for women and completely run and funded by women.
Branden Degendorfer, OVO
Branden is a panelist at this event.
Degendorfer is an in-house design team member at October’s Very Own a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University with a degree in fashion design and a 2019 recipient of the Alfred Sung Award for Excellence in Apparel Design. He has over 5 year’s experience working with Toronto based fashion labels. At OVO, my primary focus is on our menswear core programs, novelty knit, woven technical and sportswear styles.
Micaëlla Riché, Lay-Up Youth Basketball
Micaella brings 15 years of experience in the elite basketball space. She has represented on the provincial and national stages, has played and coached at the NCAA Division 1 level, and played professionally overseas. She currently brings her expertise to the community level working as the Director of Basketball Operations at Lay-Up, with a strong focus on program and coach training design and development. Having been a part of Nike and Canada Goose campaigns, Micaella’s relationship with fashion has come a long way since being the 6-foot sixth grader who wore her dad’s track suits.
Anjli Patel, Fashion Lawyer
Anjli is the host of this panel discussion.
Known locally as a “fashion lawyer,” Anjli uses her platform to educate on the value of Canadian design, and through buying, wearing, and promoting independent designers, she leads by example. Anjli has tirelessly devoted her legal practice to helping independent designers understand their rights, know their worth, and navigate all areas of the law that impact their fashion business, including contract, employment, and intellectual property.

Adam Bunch
Adam Bunch is an award-winning storyteller who brings the history of Toronto and Canada to life. He’s the author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love, the host of the Canadiana documentary series, and the creator of the Toronto Dreams Project. He’s taught history at George Brown College and created writing workshops for the Toronto Public Library. He’s spoken at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum, and his writing has appeared in The Toronto Star, Spacing Magazine and The Huffington Post. His work popularizing Canadian history was recognized with an honourable mention for a
